Montse Roa

In 2020, Montse Roa (Barcelona, 1977) went into isolation with thirty kilos of wicker and calmly and patiently set out on a journey of exploration to find her own voice and bring together her knowledge of product design and the traditional basketry techniques she had learned over the years. This inner journey led to her first collection, Zig–Zag, which, like all her pieces, is made of natural, sustainable, timeless materials that will last for generations.

The route between her native Barcelona and the rice fields of the Ebro Delta, where she discovered basket making and now has her workshop, symbolises her mental journey between tradition and modernity and her search for new uses for age–old handicrafts, allowing her to bring out the best version of herself. Going to her workshop each morning brings her true joy and the pleasure from her handwork with natural fibres is indescribable. It’s like hugging a tree the entire time, she says.
