Nuria Riaza

Nuria Riaza (Almansa, Albacete 1990) grew up in a land that is an inspiration in itself, where women and men work with their hands and where wisdom and tradition have been nurtured and treasured for centuries. This inheritance has led her to investigate crafts that were lost and to recover raw materials and ways of working with them that she has incorporated into her own creative processes. She has now established a dialogue between ceramics, drawing, embroidery and weaving wool and other natural fibres to produce works that play with opposites: soft and smooth, heavy and light, tradition and modernity, masculine and feminine…

Ten years after her initial training in Fine Art, Nuria has reached a stage where art and crafts face each other on the same level, and where ceramics provide the added value necessary for her vision as an artist. She gathers her own natural soils, which she uses to make clays, glazes and to add textures to her works and give them unique characteristics. She is also well aware that baking ceramics gives it exceptional durability and resistance, which enables her to create objects designed to pass from one generation to the next as an heirloom.
